Local knowledge - the golf insider

by Reece Witters | Auld Man Par

Once your tee times are locked in and your bags are packed ahead of a golf trip to Taupō, all you need to do is get your swing grooved and your squad fizzed with what awaits. But for those not in the know about the treats Taupō has to offer, we’ve pulled together a checklist of extra-circular items to ensure your golf trip pops.

Pre-golf: For the energetic

Take a morning stroll up the Waitahanui River to get in tune with nature. Spot a trophy trout patrolling the stream a short stroll from the main road. The Waitahanui River is gin clear and plays home to a huge amount of stunning fish. Ten minutes from town on State Highway 1 heading south. You can park at the carpark lakeside at the river mouth, cross the bridge and wander up the stunning track.

The walk up Mount Tauhara is magical. The reward of views all over Taupō is a perfect way to start the day if you’re game for a hike. On a good day, the views extend as far as Mount Taranaki - that’s bragging rights for the first tee. A fit walker will cover the 3km round trip in around 2 hours, so factor that in for your morning agenda.

Pre-golf: For those seeking energy

If you’re looking for a solid breakfast and coffee option en route to golf, look no further than Replete Cafe & Store - centrally located and locally loved. With a big range of cabinet food good to go, along with a delicious menu, they’ll get your day started right to set you up for birdies.

Post-golf: Wind down

A dip in the Wairakei Terraces mineral rich hot pools - an age 14+ spot to soothe the body and unwind from the day’s golf. Can you say you were in Taupō without a geothermal swim?

Embra - a new restaurant in town, a hot spot to go and treat yourself to incredible degustation. A bespoke dining experience in a relaxed and intimate setting. A celebration of modern Kiwi cuisine with European cooking techniques and locally grown produce. A more discerning restaurant for those looking for a touch of class.

Bantry Eatery - another local fave that we recommend booking for. A super stylish spot offering set-price, contemporary New Zealand menus, and wine. Dine outdoors in the warmer months, and an indoor fireplace keeps you cozy in the cooler months. Bantry House is a treasure of Taupō that you don't want to miss!

Post-golf: Wind up

The Two Mile Bay Sailing Club is Taupō’s official/unofficial pre and post-golf meeting spot. Open at 7 am, they have you covered with a brekkie menu to set you up for the day, barista coffee to enjoy lakeside or grab-and-go.

When it comes time to celebrate and commiserate wins and losses on the links, you’ll find live music, a tasty dinner menu, good vibes, and those stunning Taupō views! Open to 10 pm seven days a week, it’s the perfect place to bookend a day’s golf. Run by local golf enthusiasts, you can bank on them to have the PGA Tour or live golf on the TV.
