The creation of the Supervolcanic Trail Network

Only when you know the history of how the Supervolcanic Trail Network came to be, can you truly appreciate how incredible it is.

Then, when you’re riding along any of the 30 wildly different trails that cover over 380 kilometres - alongside pristine waterways, through lush native bush and conquering dramatic mountain tops - you’ll be able to marvel at the power of nature in this extraordinary geothermal environment.

Where the story began

Thousands of years ago, one of earth’s largest eruptions occurred, leaving a caldera - which is a large crater formed by a volcano erupting and then collapsing in on itself. This filled with water and became the beautiful and majestic Lake Taupō, located in the heart of the central North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand.

It also transformed the landscape of the surrounding region, spreading volcanic rock for hundreds of kilometres and creating a unique landscape you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

Today, this natural wonder offers an adventure that you can take at whatever pace you like.

And it’s where your story begins.

The Supervolcanic Trail Network

From grunty climbs and epic downhills to family-friendly rides and relax-and-have-a-coffee trails, the Supervolcanic Trail Network is Aotearoa New Zealand’s superior biking experience, and we think you should check it out for yourself.

Because what makes this extensive network extra special is that it runs along the perimeter of a supervolcano. It’s not every day you get to do something like that.

Here you’ll find trails for all kinds of riders (Grade 1 to Grade 4), not to mention some of the most stunning scenery you have ever laid your eyes on. See amazing pumice rock floating in turquoise waters, jump on board a helicopter or boat for legendary trails that are off the beaten track, or simply take your time to enjoy the stunning bird song and native flora. You can even stop off for a dip in a natural thermal pool that you’ll find dotted along the riverbank or lake’s edge.

Built to suit all ages and abilities, some of the most popular trails include Craters Mountain Bike Park, the Tongariro River Trail, the Huka Trails, the Great Lake Trails and the Waikato River Trails. There’s also plenty of friendly experts in town who are only too happy to guide you towards the best option for you and your travel companions.

The Supervolcanic Trails can be enjoyed year-round, with each season providing its own distinct backdrop. And whether you want a ride that’s short and sweet, or sweaty and supremely exhilarating, there’s always a track to suit.

Where the story continues

Our Supervolcanic region isn’t just about the beauty of the trails, but also what’s waiting for you at the end of your rides.
